Unlocking the Potential: How ADHD Can Be Your Greatest Superpower (How to use ADHD as a superpower)

Updated: Aug 8

I wanted to shed some light on the most common mental disorder in children, ADHD.

Growing up this was a term we never heard, although looking back on my childhood with the knowledge I have now it was clearly there. Children were punished for their lack of attention in class and told to stop fidgeting. But what exactly is ADHD?

Young man with glasses looks up, colorful swirls and digital icons flow from his head, symbolizing creativity and technology in a dreamy setting.
ADHD The Superpower

ADHD stands for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A misconception about the condition is that you lack attention, when this isn't the case at all. It means you have a hard time controlling or directing your attention on certain tasks. ADHD is a neurodevelopment disorder characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD is a spectrum meaning the severity can vary. Some people will lean into the more hyperactive behavior, while others may display impulsivity or inattention behaviors. Some people land right in the middle having a mix of all three of these traits.

Early signs of ADHD can often be seen in babies, although this won't be diagnosed at this age it does put the individual at a higher risk. Babies may show signs that are often pushed aside. Some of the symptoms include a generally fussy baby, or a baby that is harder to sooth. Motor delays are sometimes seen in children with ADHD. Some may have difficulty with feeding as they are unable to stay on task. Sleeping can also be a challenge if persistent. And again these just put your child at a higher risk and are not solid indicators of a diagnosis later in life. As a child continues to develop the symptoms become clearer.

Inattention Symptoms can include:

forgetfulness

lack of attention leading to careless mistakes

difficulty with organizing

lack of focus

daydreaming or being distracted

Hyperactivity/Impulsivity symptoms can include:

struggles with staying in a sitting position when they are supposed to remain seated like in class for example.

appears to always be on the go

fidgets

unusual hands or feet movements

difficulty waiting their turn for things

Now that we have an idea of what ADHD is what is the cause of it?

According to my studies this is a genetic disorder, often the child with ADHD has a biological parent with the condition. Some environmental risk factors have been identified as well. Exposure to certain toxins during fetal development such as lead, tobacco, or alcohol can increase the risks.

What can a parent do if their child is diagnosed with ADHD?

Hearing the diagnosis can be hard for many parents. There can be guilt or shame attached to this condition for parents. But for your child to thrive it is important that you seek support if you are struggling with acceptance. Your doctor will provide recommendations for treatments and medications if needed.

Treatment at home is very important for your little to thrive. Organization is important for everyday items. Keeping everything in the same place reduces frustration or escalation of behaviors. Some parents find a checklist helpful. Routine is important for a child with ADHD keeping the same schedule from the time they get up to bedtime helps keep them on track. Positive reinforcement is important in letting them know they did something good. Create consistency with rewarding appropriate behavior. When correcting behavior it is important to be consistent with punishments. Loss of privileges or time out are the best alternative to scolding or yelling at your child.

Now that I have loaded you up on information lets get into why ADHD is a Superpower.
